Upcycled knits

Capsule collection

Yesterday’s yarns, nowadays' knits

At Xandres, we are strong believers in making the aesthetic ethical, so in the autumn of 2022, we reinvested in revisiting our raw materials and their life cycles. The result is a Belgian, upcycled capsule collection of three jumpers and a plaid, each made from unused Xandres yarns from previous collections.

This temporary project took place in 2022 as part of our “Xandres Lab”

Xandres Lab

We founded the Xandres Lab a while back. "Lab," as in "Collaborate", but also "Laboratory”. We join forces with innovative, purposeful brands and designers because we believe we can learn a lot from each other and make an even bigger difference together. The Xandres Lab allows us to experiment with pilot projects to move from a linear take-make-waste model to a system that avoids waste and recycles items at the end of their life. We are aware we will never become fully sustainable, but we still feel it is important to keep setting up pilot projects.

100% Belgian

To us, responsible entrepreneurship manifests itself in long-term relationships with our production partners and suppliers.Deze capsulecollectie komt dus voort uit een volledig Belgische samenwerking tussen het Xandres designteam en haar vertrouwde knitwear-partner, lokaal geproduceerd.

100% Upcycled

It would be a shame to regard leftover, high-quality Xandres yarns from previous collections as waste products, so we decided to use these materials innovatively, creating new designs with them. The result is three unique, 100% upcycled jumpers and a plaid, each made exclusively from unused Xandres yarns. Low waste and full of personality!

This is how the collection came about

#1 PRESENTING THE PROJECT TO OUR BELGIAN KNITWEAR PARTNER.

A collaboration in which all stakeholders were closely involved, according to the schedule and capacity of our production partner, with ideas and feedback from both sides.

#2 TAKING STOCK

We first had to take stock of our remaining yarn bobbins to figure out how best to upcycle the yarn. By combining yarns that were insufficient on their own into a unique composition, we were able to reduce our waste in a valuable way.

#3 COMBINING YARNS

Together with our knitwear partner, the Xandres design team came up with different yarn combinations based on their properties, colours and available quantities.

#4 DESIGNS

Using the resulting combinations, the design team created three different, eye-catching jumpers and a plaid : colourful, unique and the same high quality you have come to expect from Xandres.

#5 PROTOTYPES AND PRODUCTION

Since our knitwear partner’s studio is located less than 40 km from our headquarters in Destelbergen and the entire production was also done there, we were able to regularly check up on things throughout the design and production process. The collection is a tribute to sustainability, circularity, and Belgian fashion and production. By reducing and repurposing our waste, we are pushing our limits and taking steps to close our cycle, even though we cannot yet successfully do so for our standard collection.

Transparency about sustainability

We believe that transparency is essential for sustainability in the fashion industry. Where better to find a partner who could help us with that than in Belgium? For this collection, we collaborated with the start-up Quifactum. The company offers a digital method to help customers learn more about how and where certain clothes are made.

By scanning a QR code on an item's label, our customers can read about the craftsmanship, skills and process behind our collection.

Try it out for yourself!
